  I booked this hotel due to leaving it to the very last minutes as I was worried about a possible lockdown. I travelled in mind Jan 2021 at the peak... read more of the 2nd wave in my home country - South Africa. Zanzibar was a breath of fresh air with virtually no signed of covid19 anywhere. Being a last minute booking I had limited choices and I preferred Nungwi or Paje which were both full. I was really impressed with the entrance and upon my arrival a water truck was delivering fresh water and filling their tank, obviously alluding to the challenges in this area. The welcome at reception was fantastic and I was immediately glad I chose this place. I was given a 3 bed apartment for my family which was modernised while retaining swahili designs. Bathrooms were really lean and smart and I loved the outdoor shower. Airconditioning was very effective. Wifi in our room was a nit erratic at times. The only thing missing was a bar fridge but we managed without. We were right at the back of the resort but it was only a minutes walk to the pool, reception area and the beach. We spent alot of our time in or at the huge pool which was really enjoyable. I liked the hammocks closer to the beach hung between some of the many giant palm tress in the resort. The beach itself was sadly a disappointment, with no water for about 1 km about 2 hours either side of low tide. When the tide does come in, the water is not very appealing or swimmable. The resort does provide swimming shoes and snorkels. We decided to walk the 1km at low tide on 2 occasions and were well rewarded once we reached a waist high depth with great snorkelling.
Some of the other facilities offered by the resort were a spa and mini games rooms. The breakfast was good but not exceptional. Restaurant is close to the beach and depends where you sit, you can have a good view. We didn't take the half board package and despite their discount offering it was still very pricey. Dinner was also expensive and we ate once only, most days eating somewhere out during excursions. The evening shows held on some days were a treat especially the acrobats.

  We scheduled our stay at the last minute because Nungwi was super busy and there was no way to social distance there especially in our hot and dreary hotel that... read more allowed smoking everywhere. And we got lucky and found a junior suite at Pongwe Bay for 6 nights. When we arrived there was screening for Covid—a first—and most of the staff were wearing masks. Cigarette smoke was probibited in the common area/restaurant and we were so grateful. The grounds are big and spacious and it makes it easy to maintain social distance. But the best things were the wonderful staff, our beautiful and comfortable airconditioned beachfront room, the spacious swimming pool, and the restaurant. We were offered full board for $25 extra per day and we shared it so our food costs were just $12.50 per day and we had plenty to eat. Most nights local acts performed during dinner—so fun. We did a lot of swimming and walking on the beach, and went snorkeling at Pongwe Reef which turned out to be very rewarding. A real gem, and the price is right.
